Krieg DeVault is pleased to announce that the firm has significantly bolstered its Governmental Affairs Practice Group by acquiring Indiana state government industry veterans Michael C. Leppert and Mathew W. Norris, both previously with the law firm of Taft Stettinius & Hollister.  Leppert, who joins the firm as Director of Public Affairs, and Norris, who joins as Of Counsel, will be integral pieces in continuing to grow one of the firm’s most prominent practices.

Michael Leppert brings 26 years of Public Affairs experience to the firm, including 14 years in the private sector as a contract lobbyist, representing a variety of corporate and non-profit clients before Indiana state and local governments.  He spent more than 12 years in public service within the State of Indiana, including five years serving as Executive Director of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.  His representation experience includes clients within the energy, water, and telecommunications industries, all growth areas for the firm.  Leppert’s areas of focus include direct lobbying, issues management, client strategic communications, and public relations consulting.

Mathew Norris joins the firm with nearly 15 years of Statehouse experience where he represented clients before the Indiana General Assembly and the State of Indiana’s administrative agencies.  Serving as a registered lobbyist for 11 years, he has represented a wide array of trade associations, multi-national corporations, and not-for-profit organizations.  Norris also brings a great depth of experience to the firm in the areas of advisement on coalition building and general issue management, with particular experience in issues related to taxation, local government, alcoholic beverages, telecommunications, and general business.  He will also assist the firm’s clients in the areas of direct lobbying, federal grass-tops organizing, issue management, and economic development.

Both Leppert and Norris become two of the three newest members to the firm’s Governmental Affairs Group within the past month.  Attorney Laura A. Brown was added to the Governmental Affairs Practice Group in early May, after serving the Indiana Senate for four years, most recently as Assistant Majority Attorney for the Senate Republican Caucus.  Brown will be representing the firm’s clients at various levels of government, in addition to managing the federal, state legislative, state executive, and local lobby compliance for the practice group.  The new additions will join an already strong Governmental Affairs Group that includes Michael D. McDaniel, former Indiana Republican State Chairman, Thomas L. New, former Chief of Staff to Governor Frank O’Bannon, Amy M. Levander who served as Governor Joseph Kernan and Governor Frank O’Bannon’s Deputy Legislative Director, David E. Corbitt, who was recently appointed to the Capital Improvement Board, Brett Ashton, who served as a representative for legislative and regulatory interest of all AIG companies in a mid-west three state region and Deborah J. Daniels, Managing Partner and former U.S. Attorney and U.S. Assistant Attorney General.

“We are very excited to welcome our newest members to the firm’s Governmental Affairs Practice Group,” said Amy M. Levander, Executive Director of Governmental Affairs and Chair of the firm’s Governmental Affairs Practice Group.  “Mike and Matt’s knowledge and solid reputation within state government, particularly in the energy sector, will allow the firm to expand our representation to a broader client base.  With over 40 years of combined experience in state government, we know both will serve as a tremendous asset to our current and future clients.”

“We believe that Mike, Matt, and Laura will be tremendous assets to our firm,” said Deborah Daniels, Managing Partner.  "Their years of service bring a broad perspective necessary to help businesses in today’s economic and political climate.”
