Krieg DeVault is pleased to announce that Executive Director of Governmental Affairs, Michael D. McDaniel, has been named as a 2025 recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. Mr. McDaniel recently received this honor from former governor Eric J. Holcomb during a formal presentation on Wednesday, January 8 in the Governor’s Office at the Indiana Statehouse.
The Sagamore of the Wabash, Indiana's highest civilian honor, was established during Governor Ralph Gates' tenure (1945-1949) as a prestigious recognition of distinguished service. Originally inspired by the Kentucky Colonel award, the title "sagamore" reflects a tradition of honoring individuals who provide wisdom and guidance, akin to a respected advisor among Native American tribes. Governors since Gates have individually bestowed this tribute upon a diverse array of recipients, including astronauts, artists, and public servants, celebrating their contributions to Indiana's heritage. The award remains a personal and esteemed acknowledgment of significant achievements and service to the state. Mr. McDaniel has received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from former governors Otis Ray Bowen, Richard Orr, Evan Bayh, Mike Pence, and Eric Holcomb.
Mr. McDaniel has an extensive background in government and politics to provide strategic insights and advocacy for the firm’s clients. His career highlights include serving as Indiana Republican State Chairman for an unprecedented three terms and chairing the National Republican State Chairmen's Advisory Committee. His leadership roles in the Republican National Committee and deep involvement in state and national politics position him as a seasoned tactician and advisor.
Mr. McDaniel’s experience spans key governmental roles, including Director of Governmental Affairs at Ball State University and Executive Director of the Indiana State Election Board. He has played pivotal roles in high-profile gubernatorial campaigns and served as Chief of Staff for Lt. Governor John Mutz. His hands-on experience in the legislative process dates back to 1974, offering clients a rich historical perspective and nuanced understanding of Indiana’s political landscape.
Mr. McDaniel frequently advises on governmental and legislative matters and is actively involved in various professional organizations, contributing to the firm’s thought leadership in public policy and advocacy. His long-standing dedication to public service and his strategic acumen ensures that clients receive unparalleled guidance and support in achieving their public policy goals.
