Krieg DeVault is pleased to announce that Partner Shelley M. Jackson has joined Duke University's Center on Law & Technology new “RAILS” initiative. RAILS, an acronym for Responsible AI in Legal Services, launched in January 2024 in response to growing ethical questions surrounding the use of AI within the legal community. RAILS brings together AI industry leaders from across the legal, judiciary, corporate, tech, and non-profit sectors to further investigate and design best practices regarding how AI can be used responsibly and ethically in the legal industry.
In addition to increasing the general understanding of AI by identifying gaps in current research and areas that need further exploration, RAILS will develop guidelines and best practices and work to educate legal professionals. These guidelines will address key issues such as client confidentiality, unbiased decision-making, transparency, accountability, and more. Ms. Jackson is a member of the Client Engagement Working Group, which will explore how to engage clients in leveraging AI opportunities while maintaining trust, transparency, and confidence.
At Krieg DeVault, Ms. Jackson leads the firm’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force, chairs the Labor and Employment Practice, and is integrally involved with the Health Care Practice. She has observed first-hand the need for law firms and other legal service providers to remain vigilant when navigating AI-related opportunities and risks. “I am inspired and honored to join an innovative group of thought leaders during this time of unprecedented AI-related growth within the legal industry,” said Jackson. “RAILS provides a valuable forum to be proactive and curious about the future of AI.”
Krieg DeVault’s team of Artificial Intelligence attorneys are available to assist clients in navigating the many opportunities and risks that accompany AI. The firm serves several key industries and business sectors, including health care, financial services, government, municipalities, industrial, consumer goods, aerospace, education, and real estate. Krieg DeVault’s AI team provides cohesive guidance for navigating common AI issues in employment and recruiting matters, transactional matters, insurance coverage, intellectual property rights, data privacy and cybersecurity, AI policies, ethics, antitrust, and risk management. Additional information regarding the RAILS initiative can be found here.
